We have to protect ourselves from OURSELF first!
An adult without self-discipline and self-control can behave like an uncontrolled child who doesn't get spanked when heavily required. This can make us self destructive and a nuisance to others. We must have a way that keeps us in check so others can trust us not to sporadically do whatever we want, when we want, regardless of the harm that it may cause others.
Martial Arts, fitness, weight lifting, ... all can be tools that we use to discipline our lives by assuring that we are never getting "worse" at doing it, and always striving to get "better". Because we have to do the right things to become a better person.
